1.Look for the most obvious visual evidence you see in the composition.
The formal visual elements are: Line Shape Texture Value Form Space Color
- Use specific supporting details to describe how the artist used the element. .
- Demonstrate your understanding of the element of art in the way you describe its use by the artist
- Create a clear image in the reader’s mind.
- Describe what content”facts” you see in the picture (save the opinions and deeper meaning for the next steps) what is this a picture of?
- To be thorough, describe at least 3 elements in detail.Use complete sentences.
2.Analyze how the artist organized the picture with the principles of design
The organizing principles of design are: balance, rhythm/movement, contrast, Unity/harmony, emphasis/dominance, pattern/ repetition, proportion/scaleĀ
Use supporting details; what balances out what?What contrasts with what?
What devices did the artist use to give a certain object/ area emphasis/dominance?
- position in composition, size, contrast pathways to area/object?
What devices did the artist use to create harmony/unity
- similar color, value, shape, form, texture, line?
- grouping? alignment?
How did the artist use scale and proportion?
- natural, distorted?
- as related to what indicators of space?
- Other figures, interior details, exterior details, landscape details
